Bari Airport Trains

In 2013 a new train line was opened which has a connection at the airport and can take you to the main train station in the city centre, Bari Centrale. This line is called the FM2 line (or FR2 line) and it is operated by the Bari metropolitan railway service - Ferrotramviaria S.P.A. The station is not that close to the airport, so you must add at least 10 minutes to your journey time to walk to the platform; however, it is well signposted from the terminal and it will take you through a series of tunnels.

There are 41 trains operating on weekdays and 33 trains operating on weekends, which depart the airport between 05:26 and 23:38 at intervals between 20 and 30 minutes. A journey from the airport to Bari Centrale will take 17 minutes and stop at 5 stations along the way.

The route it takes is as follows:

  • Fermata Aeroporto (Airport)
  • Fermata Europa
  • Stazione Fesca San Girolamo
  • Fermata Via Crispi
  • Fermata Via Brigata Bari
  • Fermata Via Quintino Sella
  • Stazione Centrale (Central Station)

At least one stop will be skipped on each journey, which is usually Stazione Fesca San Girolamo, but it will depend on the time of day you travel.

If you wish to download the full timetable it can be found on the official website at www.ferrovienordbarese.it/times.

Price

A journey from the airport to the central station or vice versa will cost €5.00 per person for a one-way ticket. This price may seem reasonable at first, but airport passengers have to pay a premium for this service. If you were to get on the train at the next stop, Fermata Europa, you would only have to pay €1.10 to get the central station, and the stop after the airport, Bitonto SS Medici, costs just €1.40, so you can see there is a premium to pay for catching the train at the airport.

If you wish to take the train then tickets can be purchased at the train station or online. There is no difference in the price and you will always find a seat available, so an online booking is not necessary. If you would like to book online though tickets can be purchased at www.ferrovienordbarese.it.

Any ticket you purchase is not time specific, so it doesn’t matter if your plane is late and you miss the time you originally planned to travel, but tickets must be used on the date printed on the ticket.

Ticket validation

One thing to take note of in Italy is train tickets must be validated before you board a train. This is a simple process of getting your ticket stamped with a time before you board and this can be done by inserting your ticket into a machine on the platform. These machines are usually referred to as the 'Yellow Box' as they are bright yellow. Just ensure you do this before you board and you won't have any issues. Fines can be issued for tickets that have not been validated.

Going further than Bari

If you need to continue your journey from the central station then it is possible you can catch a direct train to some major cities in the country, as well as direct trains to local towns/cities. Bari Centrale is part Italy's national railway network so you will find local services, regional services, intercity services and Italy's high-speed service, as well as the metropolitan service that takes you to and from the airport.

Here is a list of the routes and stops that can be taken. Note that these can be taken in each direction.
